F. Thilo Haut

My passion for wood and cabinet making started early in my youth. After finishing high school I studied furniture making in England at the renowned Parnham College, School for Craftsman in Wood. The college was founded by the prestigious british furniture designer and maker John Makepeace. Part of the program that I completed 1999 were techniques in all aspects of woodworking and cabinet making, as well as furniture design and business studies.
Following this education I studied product design at the University of Kassel, Germany and started to set up my own workshop. Here I make bespoke furniture and small batch productions for institutional and private clients. The brief and clients wishes form the starting point of my work. Besides individual design I emphasize on realizing my work with a special attention to details, materials and craftsmanship. It is my goal to build furniture and objects of long lasting design quality with a high level of craftsmanship.

Design

Each project starts with the design process. Apart from the clients ideas and budget, the design is influenced by many factors. Inspirations from nature, contemporary movements and historic styles are incorporated, as well as the wood being used, materials, colors and ergonomic needs. In agreement with the client, using visuals, drawings and mock-ups, furniture design is created that fits the spatial and functional needs where it will later be used.

Furniture Making

The furniture is made by hand mainly out of the material wood. Alongside the nearly unlimited variety of wood species, textures and characteristics are as many techniques of working with it. Part of these is traditional joinery in solid wood, working with veneers, marquetry or laminations, turning, carving and all kinds of finishing techniques. If other materials or crafts are needed, such as metalwork or upholstery, these will be supported by excellent craftsman from different trades.

Interior Design

Furniture is usually used in a setting with other objects and interiors as well as by people that live and work there. Lighting design, color and surfaces, appropriate floor planning and in public spaces also brand messages are part of a consistent interior. I do not only consider these aspects when designing furniture for a certain space, but also create complete interior design concepts.
